Store assignment
The store I chose to shop at was Romancing the Stone. I chose this store because there are not stores like this at the malls around my hometown. My initial perception of this store was that it was pretty "hippy-like". After shopping around in there, I still thought it was hippy-like because of the kind of stuff sold there. Theres lots of incense, hookahs, buddah figures, crazy tribal music, etc. It was pretty unique. Everyone who worked there was very nice, offered help, and seemed to really enjoy working there. It was a laid back atmosphere and kind of made me feel like I wanted to be more...I dont know, laid back like I guess you could say. So overall, I thought the store was pretty cool and unique,a nd I think their marketing strategies work because I definitely felt like I wanted to "chill out". haha.

Persuaders Video
First of all, I really really loved this video. I found everything about it interesting and helpful! I really the marketing and advertising field so I liked to see how the business is evolving. Certain parts that particularly grabbed my attention was how the evolution of technology has forced us to move ads in tv shows and movies. I thought, wow what if Starbucks could have only been so smart as to use their business in a tv show like Friends, it's genius. It's amazing how in the last 10 years, advertising has changed so much. I just overall really like this video.
As for Americans seeking some sort of identity through a brand, the video explains that there is a bigger and deeper meaning behind a product or a brand. Like Starbucks, they achieve the idea that Starbucks is a 3rd place, not home and not work. Also, marketers have studied why people join cults and then apply that to a brand. Like a certain identity that Harley Davidson riders have. What marketers do to try to persuade is just that, make their brand have a certain image or identity to them. They usually provide some kind of emotional appeal, or a bigi idea that most or all americans view as ideal, like the idea of love, happiness, health, beauty, etc.
According to the video, Axciom seems to have everyone's future figured out, and seems to have the solution as to how to get rid of clutter. My thoughts are that, if narrowcasting is working now, I dont see why it wont in the future. I think it's a very smart and advanced technique to targeting certain groups, and I guess I hope for advertisers that it will work. But just like the narrator says, we're all persuaders.

RAW video-Late due to family emergency-excused absences
Our video was the best! Thanks to Ryan! I think our strategy was good because even though we annoyed some people, we got their attention! Responsibility always wins!

RAW Group Projects
I saw Group M's chalk stats and I personally didn't think it was very effective because no one really looks at chalk anymore since the sororities and fraternities overuse this idea. I'm not sure how they couldv'e done it better if they wanted to stick to their original concept of using chalk stats, but it wasn't a horrible idea.
Group C's drama skit was good. I thought they grabbed a lot of peoples attention when John pretended to be passed out. It was good!
I do think that doing activities like these will continue to gain awareness. I have heard several people talk about RAW and I think all of the exercises have got peoples attention. It was even in the DE, so I think we were successful.

Blog Assignment #3
When I looked around my room in search of something for this assignment, I came across my Roxy rashguard. I initially questioned buying it because I didn't know how often I would use it. But the brand is Roxy. When I see or hear this brand I always think of surfing, summer, bikini's, PacSun, and beachy. The reason why I think of those things is because the majority of people who wear Roxy gear or clothes are women and lots of times, surfers. Roxy is a women's line created by Quicksilver which is surf gear and clothing for guys.
According to brandtags.net, the top 10 words relating to this brand were...
1.surf
2.music
3.surfer
4.girls
5.heart
6.surfing
7.?
8.surfer girl
9.girl
10.foxy
For the most part, my view and others' views of this brand are similar in that we all think of surfing for the most part. My perception just differs in that I think I also view Roxy as a fashionable brand for clothing and gear and not just surfers, but I do think of surfers a lot when I see the brand. I know that this brand originated for female surfers so I am pretty sure thats why everyone thinks of surfing and girls when they see this brand.

My better is better than your better...
This is one of my favorite ads because it motivates me to work out. Every time I see a good Nike or Gatorade ad it makes me want to get off my lazy butt and go exercise. What really catches my attention about this particular ad is the fast pace music and the portrayal of how hard the athletes are working out. This Nike commercial definitely wants to make me go out and be more active and also somehow makes me want to go out and buy cute Nike work out clothes! I think this ad is extremely effective for people like me who try to be more active. It's motivating when you see it and it reminds you that you shouldn't be sitting there watching tv, and instead should be out running or something.

Goals for Semester
My goal for this semester is to really figure out what specific area of study is best for me. I am very interested in marketing, PR, advertising, and IMC, but I don't know which area is best fit for me. I am constantly changing my mind and struggling with deciding which one to choose as my major. My goals for this class specifically, Journalism 301, is to learn about what each area of study entails. I would like to learn what kinds of opportunities I could potentially have in each field, and also which may be considered more applicable than the others. I want to know if choosing one major over the other will restrict me on a large scale in the future. Will a major in PR prohibit me from getting a job with a marketing or advertising firm, or visa versa?
I basically want to narrow my area of study and put forth a lot of time and dedication to make myself more applicable for future employers.
